Our first week of traveling is behind us. And what fun it was.
Filled with sunshine, palm trees, beautiful beaches, and crystal clear ocean water, I am still not sure why we didn’t start doing this years ago.
The kids are doing school in the morning and after that we are hitting the beach, looking at sights and other fun stuff. At night we are either cooking at home or enjoying the occasional fantastic dinner with an ocean view at a cute restaurant. There have been games, long sunset walks, and lots and LOTS of playtime splashing away in the ocean waves.
It’s after the summer so all the tourists are gone and most days we have whichever beach we go to ourselves. All the tourist attractions are empty so you can actually get a good, calm, relaxing look at them.
Kids look sunkissed and happy, we even still need sun lotion around here. Olives are growing on trees, they are selling fresh mandarins, and flowers are still blooming in amazing colors. It’s shorts and T-shirt weather – a far cry from the foggy grey coldness we see on the webcams at home.
As far as homeschooling goes I feel like the kids are learning a LOT more than they ever did in any classroom. Of course, there is the “actual” school day part of their day every morning, but – much more important than that – there is all the after-school time that isn’t spent on endless hours of stressed-out kids doing homework or studying for one test or another. There is no pressure anymore so they are starting to ask millions of questions. About the ocean, history, nature, this and that, and then some. And they are learning so much from talks and us simply being able to show them.
This – and I think that bears repeating – beats any classroom by a long shot.
The boss, the general, and the brains of the operation. Anya is the mom of this crazy group of misfits. When not traveling the world and teaching her kids to be decent human-beings, she likes to bake, sing, be goofy. Aside from all that she does for Five of a Kind, she is also a short term foster mother for infants in need.
She also enjoys unreasonably spicy foods and is searching for a hot sauce that is spicy enough and yet still has some kind of flavor to it.
