We are a half German, half American family consisting of two parents and three kids. Granted, we will also be taking our dogs and other necessary pets with us, but to keep things simple we are Five of a Kind.
- Chris – American Dad
- Anya – German Mom
- Number 1 – 14 (at the start of the blog)
- Number 2 – 11 (at the start of the blog)
- Number 3 – 9 (at the start of the blog)
Number 1, 2, and 3?
The kids are going to be getting cool nicknames to use on the blog and on social media. We don’t want to put them out there until they are old enough to decide for themselves that they are ok with it. We also don’t want to be putting our 9 year olds picture all over the internet for the fun of it. We aren’t huge data privacy nuts, but we do have some limits to what we post.
What are we doing?
We, like so many others, were sick and tired of the 9-5. Get up, go to work, pay bills, go to bed, repeat. For the kids it was get up, go to school, do homework, go to bed, repeat. I’m not sure which of those is worse.
During the first Corona wave, when the kids were forced to do distance learning, and I was forced into home office, we got to thinking. What if the “home” that we used wasn’t always our home? What if that home was in Italy? Or maybe Portugal? I’ve heard good things about Iceland…
The list started growing, the kids loved the idea, and we were finding less and less that spoke against the idea.
Now we have a plan. We are going to spend 6 months each year living somewhere else. It will always be changing. The kids will be home schooled, I will be home officed, and Mom Adkins will be forced to deal with all of us. I really feel kind of bad for her.
Homeschooling? Really?
Yes! Not only will our children be learning everything that they need for a High School Diploma, but they will also have additional school work like trying to pick up everything for supper at a grocery store where they don’t know the language. How can you get the right loaf of bread if you can’t talk to the person behind the counter? They will also have P.E. at a playground in a different country. How can they play with the other kids?
We aren’t just going to rip our kids out of school because we can do better than they can. We are going to take our kids out of school, use a time tested curriculum with a large community working together, and show our kids the world. We are going to show them that anything is possible if you set your mind to it. Obviously it would be easier to keep doing the 9-5, or keep going to school, but the world has so much more to offer!
Show our kids the world.
Why this blog?
We are going to be keeping this blog for us and for the world. Ok, it is starting off mainly for us. We want to document our trials and tribulations so that we can look fondly back at it at some point and saw “awwww!”
We are also hoping that someone else might see this and be able to get some pointers from it. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if someone saw this and started giving us pointers! It is mainly about us helping people while those same people help us.
